Basic Info
Name:Calum MacDonald
Bio
Name: Calum MacDonald
Age: 34
Height: 6'1
Hair: Black
Eyes: Blue
Born: Glenfinnan, Cape Breton, 1938
Died: Canso Causeway, Cape Breton, 1999

Family: Three living grandparents, three younger brothers, one sister. Parents and one younger brother died on the ice when he was 16. Also, the extended clann Chaluim Ruaidh, the descendants of Calum MacDonald, who immigrated to Cape Breton in the 1730s from the Moidart of Scotland.

Education: Scattered formal schooling and home school until he was sixteen. Basic literacy, rudimentary math skills.

Fluent in: English and Gaidhlig (Scots Gaelic)

A note on accent: Because I feel it's important to know how a character speaks. Calum has a Cape Breton accent, which, if one hasn't heard it, is like a Newfoundland accent but more Gaidhlig than Irish, with severely Gaidhlig sentence structure. Extend some vowel sounds and remove almost all 'h's from normal speech. I could type out the accent, but I t'ink dat typin' every word dat comes from his mout' would get t' be a right hassle. There's even a Wikipedia article on said accent.

Personal history: Calum has been a fisher, a farmer, and a miner, and has, according to the courts who convicted him of second-degree murder, "a violent history". Since the death of his parents, he had supported himself and his brothers by subsistence farming, fishing, and lobster trapping. Eventually, driven off the island by the lack of jobs, he led a branch of the clann Chaluim Ruaidh to the mines of Ontario, Peru, South Africa, and everywhere in between. As short-term contract miners, the clann was greatly in demand and did very well for themselves. Until, that is, the long-standing grudge with a French Canadian crew broke into an all-out brawl and Calum killed their leader, Fern Picard, in self-defense.

Personality: Calum is a leader, a strong man who has been self-sufficient (as much as anyone is in a clan) since he was sixteen. He often has a rough and quick temper, but is a genuinely good person underneath. Like all Scots, he can hold a grudge for generations, and be just a loyal. He stands by what he believes in, even if those beliefs are slow to change. Afflicted by the same regional generational poverty as the rest of the island, he is thrifty and sober when it comes to important matters, and given to drinking and music every other time. Like all Highlanders (Scottish or Caper), family and clan is everything to him. Although he never studied history, he knows all the battles and rebellions of his clan's history, from Bannockburn with Robert the Bruce down to the 1745 Rebellion under the Bonnie Prince, as if they're a part of his own personal history. A brief history of the MacDonalds, as cribbed from the Playhouse Theatre Company playbill for the stage production of No Great Mischief.
